Position:         Senior Accountant

Status:            Full Time, Non-Exempt, Salary Hourly DOE

Supervisor:    Tribal  Council Treasurer


Under the direction of the Tribal Council Treasurer, the Senior Accountant position will entail many facets of the Tribal Accounting Department and responsibilities will cover all aspects of the Tribal Operations, particularly pertaining to our fiscal accountability of the Federal and/or State Grants. This position will involve, but not limited to, verifying of postings and/or check runs for vendors, maintaining grant and/or vendor files and must ensure accurate reporting.  In addition, the Senior Accountant will be in charge of creating and/or implementing fiscal policies as required. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for maintaining an accurate General Ledger for all accounts and will provide all required reporting, including month-end, quarterly, and year-end. The Senior Accountant must have experience with Government Fund Accounting and Grant Operations. This includes all grant reporting of funding sources. The Senior Accountant will ensure all financial reporting is complete and accurate. The Senior Accountant will take the lead role in the yearly fiscal audit. The Senior Accountant needs to be a team player and must be able to work well with Tribal Council and co-workers. Must be self-motivated, have the capacity to multi-task, and possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills.


  • Fiscal reporting for all Federal and State Grants
  • Create and maintain all files for all Federal and State Grants
  • Reconcile and maintain the general ledger of all accounts
  • Process and maintain the records of all journal entries and Tribal balances
  • Reconcile and maintain monthly bank statements of all accounts
  • Verify payroll process, including payroll tax payments, and quarterly/year-end reporting
  • Create, file and maintain all forms 1099s and w-2s at year-end
  • Verify and validate invoices received
  • Verify correct coding and posting of invoices for payment
  • Confirm and verify authorization of invoices
  • Process and distribute authorized payments to vendors
  • Forecast, monitor and track cash flow (weekly, monthly, quarterly etc.)
  • Verify the maintenance of the excel files for import for monthly billings (Tribal programs)
  • Process monthly Tribal distribution and process associated tax payments
  • Must be able to follow instructions and communicate effectively
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically, Word and Excel
  • Ability to work well with the general public, Tribal Administration, Tribal Council and Tribal Members
  • Verify the completed inventory of office equipment on quarterly basis
  • Exceptional customer service and phone skills
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Other duties as directed by the Tribal Treasurer and/or Tribal Council


The Senior Accountant position requires an accounting background preferably with a BA/BS  degree (or) accounting experience with a minimum of 5 years & Grant budgeting. A complete knowledge of processing payroll accounts payable and accounts receivable is required. Knowledge and familiarity with governmental accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite and general Windows environment with emphasis in Excel are also required. Must have the ability to bend and lift up to 20-25 pounds and sit at a desk for long periods of time. Also, you must be able to work flexible hours and have the ability to fulfill work schedules routinely and punctually.
